about
New York-based record label Youngbloods presents "The Willows": the second single release from Israeli singer, songwriter, and film composer Zoe Polanski's forthcoming full-length "Violent Flowers".
"The Willows is a loose, "stream of consciousness"-style journey log in which I express some recollections from a trip I made to the US a few years back, following up on a relationship that started in Tel Aviv. The first stop of the trip was The Willows Hotel in Chicago, then I went down south all the way to New Orleans. Being far away from home, but also in a state of intimacy, I felt I was drifting through a strange adventure.
It took us a while to find the right groove for this one. Eventually Aviad, the project's producer, came up with a beat that sounded to us like the echo of a far away, slow motion dance floor, and we felt it sat perfectly with the basic loop and bass progression. He also created a synth out of fog horns which got us super excited, and a big question we had was whether to have it open the song, or to keep the opening minimal with just the original loop. We ended up using it only later in the song, and instead, Aviad mixed in a sound of a pistol fire, as if to start the race and animate the first line of the song with a sonic metaphor."
"Violent Flowers" will be printed on limited edition 12” vinyl LP and released across digital channels worldwide on July 17th, 2020.
lyrics
Release the horses
And let them run their courses
In silent motion
Across an endless ocean
Back in the old days
I’ve only known you one way
Your voice in speakers
Had made my heart feel weaker
Then you became alive and played
Your sad guitar beneath the stars
I was a sparrow
I flew there like an arrow
And fell on pillows
Under the weeping willows
In January
I saw the estuary
The stormy weather
Had worked out for the better
And you were there in southern air
As real as I, demystified
Stay with me, you whispered to me
Realize how rare these days are
You’ll miss it all before you know it
But i’ll be gone forever
